Description

Most people know the scarab beetle for its role in ancient Egyptian spiritual practices. They’ve seen the stunning, stylized amulets and pieces of jewelry. What many people don’t realize is that the scarab beetle is a type of dung beetle. This is what I love about the scarab beetle. Not only is it a handsome creature, it is an integral part of the life cycle. It is an important reminder that spirituality is not necessarily above or separate from these natural cycles. While my culture doesn’t have any traditions around the scarab beetle specifically, or dung beetles more generally, the scarab beetle reminds me of many of the coyote stories that I grew up with, the ones that don’t get published in children’s books.
