Description
While Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night is a comedy, I’ve always resonated with more serious themes revealed by Viola’s situation. She chooses to disguise herself as a man in order to keep herself safe and navigate the world she finds herself in. While I think it is a universal human experience to hide aspects of ourselves in order to navigate the day-to-day, I think that women and, in particular, minority women understand Viola’s dilemma and the consequences of this choice. I’ve chosen to metaphorically represent the moment Viola chooses to share her true identity to those she has come to love and trust. It is a moment of great vulnerability and courage.
